Waldo Canyon Fire Restoration - Willow Planting

Registration is closed for this event
MAY 31, 2017, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Due to a successful pilot year in 2016, RMFI and partners with the US Forest Service will continue our willow propagation project in the Waldo Canyon burn scar. In January 2017, RMFI and Forest Service staff members harvested willow cuttings from targeted areas off of the Pikes Peak Highway. These cutting have since been shipped to the Bessey Nursery in Nebraska where they will be cut and propagated into approximately 2,500 willows that will be tended to for nearly 4 months. On May 31st, we are in need of volunteers to help transplant these willows in sections of the Waldo Canyon burn scar at similar elevations to where they were harvested from Pikes Peak. This initiative will help to continue the revegetation and restoration of the Waldo Canyon burn scar.

This is a somewhat strenuous workday at elevation. Volunteers will be hiking a short ways into the Waldo burn scar at a drainage opening off of Highway 24 a short distance below the former trailhead. Sturdy, high-ankle hiking boots are strongly recommended for this workday. Once on-site, volunteers will assist with transplanting as many of the 2,500 young willows as possible. Some carrying of the plants may be needed as well.
  • 7 AM to 4 PM
  • Minimum age requirement is 16.
If you have questions, or would like to register a group for this workday, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Molly at molly@rmfi.org or 719-471-7736 ext. 4#
