Dixon Trail Walk-Through, Top of Cheyenne Mountain

August 10, 2016

From July 26th through the 31st, seven volunteers and two RMFI Field Instructors camped atop Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs as part of RMFI's Volunteer Vacation Program. Their days were spent constructing the forthcoming Dixon Connector Trail from the mountain's top down. This walk-through video, filmed and narrated by RMFI's Program Coordinator, shows the full segment of new trail constructed by the Volunteer Vacation team. All in all, 450 feet of new trail was constructed over the course of their 6-day program. Tremendous work!

RMFI's Earth Corps Program

Now in its 15th year, RMFI's Earth Corps Program is our signature education program providing the opportunity for ten undergraduate students to immerse themselves in the backcountry of the Colorado mountains while completing a critical high alpine trail project, earning college credit in Geography and Environmental Studies, and gaining outdoor leadership skills and knowledge of natural resource management. Mt. Muscoco Trail Dedication

In the spring of 2015, RMFI partnered with the Friends of Cheyenne Cañon, the City of Colorado Springs, and others to build a new and improved trail to the top of Mt. Muscoco in North Cheyenne Cañon. On July 2nd, 2015, the ribbon-cutting and official dedication ceremony took place in order to unveil this exciting new trail! Video courtesy of the City of Colorado Springs.

Waldo Canyon Trail Workday on Fox 21 News

November 4, 2014

Fox 21 paid us a visit during a restoration workday on the Waldo Canyon Trail. In fall of 2014, RMFI and a crew from Mile High Youth Corps began restoration work to stabilize surrounding hillslopes to mitigate further degradation to the trail caused by stormwater runoff from the burned canyon above. The workday filmed by Fox 21 News was the first open enrollment volunteer event in which community members were invited in to the restricted area to work alongside RMFI and the Youth Corps and get a first look at what has become of the Waldo Canyon Trail since the 2012 fire.
