Pikes Peak Regional Crew Leader Training FAQs

What is crew leader training?

Crew Leader Training is a program that will give committed trail volunteers the opportunity to “take it to the next level.” The program begins with an intensive weekend-long course at which participants will learn how to lead safe, successful trail projects and develop basic trail construction and restoration skills. Following the weekend course,  participants must co-lead two volunteer workdays under the supervision of expert crew leaders in order to obtain their official certification as a volunteer Crew Leader.

Are there any prerequisites?

Yes. You must have previously participated in at least two trail workdays to be eligible for Crew Leader Training. If you have not previously participated in two trail workdays, there is still time! Visit www.rmfi.org and/or www.openspacevolunteers.org for a schedule of upcoming workdays that will take place prior to the training. Additionally, applicants are required to pass a criminal background check in order to participate. The check is free of charge to the applicant.

When is Crew Leader Training?

Crew Leader Training 2019 will be held Friday evening, April 26th from 5:30pm-8:30pm, and Saturday and Sunday, April 27th and 28th from 8:00am-4:30pm. Two additional certification workdays to follow the training will be scheduled by the trainee and must occur within the same calendar year as the weekend training session.

What is the cost to participate?

There is a non-refundable $25 application fee to help cover materials for the weekend training.

Do I have to attend the entire training?

Yes. If you cannot attend the entire weekend-long training, or will not be available in the season to complete two subsequent certification workdays, please do not apply. Most certification workday opportunities will occur prior to October 1, 2019.

How do I sign up for my certification days?

When the certification workday schedule is finalized, it will be sent via email to all who are registered for the training, along with instructions for signing up. Space on each certification workday is limited to two certifying Crew Leaders. Sign up early! Trainees must sign up for their two certification days no later than the last day of the weekend training course (April 28).

How often do I have to crew lead once I am certified?

We ask that certified crew leaders lead at least one project per work season. Your certification will automatically renew each year that this requirement is fulfilled.

I am concerned I may not pass the background check. What does the check look for?

Before filling out the program application and paying the non-refundable application fee, you may contact Molly Mazel at [email protected] or 719-471-7736 ext. 4# to discuss any concerns about the background check.

Where can I sign up?

Find the link to the Application Page here. If you do not already have one, you must create a basic log-in account on the RMFI website.
