New Restoration Efforts Planned for the Hayman Burn Area

This summer an exciting new 3-year collaboration between the National Forest Foundation (NFF), Vail Resorts, and the USDA Forest Service will re-energize efforts to complete on-the-ground restoration work in the Hayman Burn area of the Upper South Platte watershed. Projects will be completed as part of the NFF’s Upper South Platte/Hayman Conservation Campaign. Areas damaged by the fire are still producing a large amount of sediment. The sediment is being delivered to the South Platte River, impacting water quality and wildlife habitat. Efforts to mitigate continuing impacts will include riparian restoration, enhancement and relocation of trails, reforestation, noxious weed eradication, and native plant and wildlife habitat restoration. Projects within the burn area will be completed by a variety of entities, including the Forest Service, local nonprofits, and youth corps. The Rocky Mountain Field Institute is proud to be a partner in this effort and our Pikes Peak Corps program for high school youth will be completing several projects this summer.
