A Message from the RMFI Board President
June 4, 2025 by Calla Balliett
RMFI Friends,
In recent years, it’s felt like we’ve all faced the realities of change occurring at a quickened pace. Examples include the pandemic, shifting administrations with starkly different agendas, and navigating the ever-changing funding environment. At the organizational level, RMFI has moved offices, modernized its major operational and internal processes and systems, and experienced two Executive Director leadership transitions. To many of us, it has felt like a storm surge—juggling so much change in rapid succession.
In times like these, I'm reminded that while a downpour is intense, it alone does not reshape rock. Instead, it is soft, consistent water drops that do so over time. Small steps lead to big changes. While we can't see that transformation in real time, the impact is real and lasting.
I view RMFI's mission in the same light. RMFI holds a certain magnetism in our hearts because of how it serves our entire community by working consistently, tirelessly, to make change—to conserve, protect, and help ensure that future generations can experience the sacred outdoor places many of us find great solace in. Many trail users may not know how painstaking those rock stairs were to build or why the sometimes harsh, short-term optics of erosion control or fire mitigation are indeed essential. But the beauty is that there's an organization that consistently sees this work through. Thanks to RMFI and its volunteers, every workday, structure, and shovel strike amounts to important change in our region.
RMFI’s work remains consistent and remarkably strong in 2025. The interim leadership committee (Kristen, Carl, and Sam) routinely show their thoughtful and effective leadership, helping the team culture thrive. The organization is thrilled to field our excellent trail crews this season, working toward meaningful projects and stewardship priorities on our public lands. RMFI’s exciting strategic direction (more to come on this) has also been refined through our newly adopted strategic plan. You'll likely notice new initiatives being announced over the coming year as we aim to increase the positive impact of RMFI’s mission. As we gear-up for the hard but rewarding work ahead, we invite you to join us in whatever way most fulfills you. With mutual dedication to consistency and engagement, we can make the lasting impact that many of us desire for our region’s treasured landscapes.
See you on the trails!
Alex Lippert
