Waldo Canyon Fire Restoration
Although it has been almost three years since the Waldo Canyon Fire, it is important to remember just how large of an impact the 2012 fire has made on this steep and critical area of our region. A total of 18,000 acres in five major watersheds were torched by this fire and plenty of work remains to stabilize these slopes that continue to pose flash flood risks to our community below. This spring RMFI will be working in the upper reaches of Waldo Canyon building hillslope stabilization structures and assisting the revegetation process.
A steep three mile hike up the canyon, at times while carrying tools, will be required to access our worksites. Work tasks will be strenuous and on steep and uneven terrain. This project is recommended for volunteers who are accustomed to regular physical exercise. Minimum age 16. All workdays 7:30am to 4:30pm.
Pre-registration is required for all workdays, and many events fill up well in advance. Call or email with any questions, or to get your name on the list! Contact: RMFI Volunteer Coordinator, Molly Mazel, at molly@rmfi.org or 719-471-7736.
