Saturday, October 15, 2016, 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM - Buck & Rail Fencing Training and Workday

Work and learn with RMFI! Geared for Regional Volunteer Crew Leaders but open to anyone, RMFI will host an educational workday to cover some finer points and lessons-learned of physical closure of social trails and restoration areas by obstacles and fencing. Stewardship organizations in the Pikes Peak region often face the challenge of keeping visitor traffic off of newly-restored areas where no single approach to physical closure is always appropriate. In this training opportunity workday, RMFI staff will discuss different closure techniques that may be adapted to varying conditions and will lead students in the layout and construction of a newer fence design in the area, the buck-and-rail fence system.

The buck-and-rail fence (pictured below) does not require pre-fabricated components, may be constructed wtih on-site timber using hand-tools (provided land manager’s approval for harvesting), presents a more rustic appearance, and is included in more and more of the region’s parks’ master plans as an option. This option is particularly effective in areas where thinning of dense forested areas can produce fencing components. RMFI anticipates using this fencing design on more local public space properties in 2017, including in support of trail re-alignments on the Black Forest Regional Park

Priority spots in this traning will be allocated to volunteers who have completed the Pikes Peak Regional Crew Leader Training but is open to any volunteers interested in learning this fencing technique.

Pre-registration is required. Please contact Molly Mazel with any questions or to sign up: 719-471-7736 ext. 4# or molly@rmfi.org
